My German League Draft

My German league started their draft today. On a side note, this was the league that our former commenter Zak invited me to join (God rest his soul). It’s a slow draft (no time limit for picks), which I prefer. While I enjoy doing a draft all at once, that only works in a bar to enjoy it fully. Online, slow drafts just work better.

As for the league, it is superflex dynasty with half-ppr. This draft is strictly rookies. I will update this thread each day.

So today’s picks:

1.01: QB Caleb Williams. Even though I consider Williams riskier than his elevated status gives him, I would probably take him with the 1.01 in superflex. The upside justifies it.

1.02: QB Jayden Daniels. Although ECR has WR Marvin Harrison going second, this one makes perfect sense considering the owner’s other QB’s: Bryce Young, Zach Wilson, Davis Mills, and Dorian Thompson Robinson.

1.03: WR Marvin Harrison: No-brainer dynasty pick. Harrison will likely be a great one for many years to come.

1.04: QB J.J. McCarthy: Ever so slight of a reach. ECR has him going 5th. That said, this owner needs help in a lot of places, including QB. ECR has WR Malik Nabors as the pick here, and the WR’s on this team need some improvement (Josh Downs, Wan’dale Robinson, Mike Evans, Hollywood Brown, Jonathan Mingo, Zay Jones, and Quez Watkins). That said, in superflex, you are never completely wrong for drafting a QB early. Would I have made this pick? Maybe. This is a coin-toss owner decision.

Sorry, only 4 picks today, Overall, they make sense for this league. I don’t pick until the 8th and 9th rounds, out of 12 teams. But I have many ideas at this point. Stay tuned…

1.05 Malik Nabors: The logical next pick. No issues here.

Day 2:

1.06: WR Rome Odunze. Also a good pick for dynasty. If Caleb Williams hits, Odunze will likely be a big winner as well.

1.07: QB Drake Maye. Great superflex pick. However, I like the next one better…

1.08: QB Bo Nix. Outside of the first two QB’s taken, Nix is my favorite, mainly for his situation. He’s the perfect QB for a Sean Payton offense. Highly accurate, but also capable of the deep ball, I love this guy. And yes, this was my draft pick, in addition to the next pick…

1.09: TE Brock Bowers. This might be the best player in the draft. Although I didn’t need a TE (I have Sam Laporta), I can’t walk away from a player of this talent. Worse comes to worse, I can package one of them in a trade.

1.10: WR Xavier Worthy. I am not sure how good Worthy is, but his situation is ideal.

1.11: WR Brian Thomas. Another WR in a good situation. JAX needs a WR.

1.12: Ladd McConkey. Ladd is a kid who impressed me last year in Georgia. I was hoping he might fall to me in the 2nd round, but no such luck. If you get the ball anywhere near him, he is catching it. Great hands, and good route running.

Day 3:

2.01: RB Jonathon Brooks: This year’s draft is easily the worst RB class I can recall. Brooks is easily the only RB I would have considered, but even in the 2nd round, there were WR’s I was more excited about. Still, not a bad pick for a team that needed an RB. It should be noted this team drafted Malik Nabers AND Rome Odunze in the first round. Quite a draft haul!

2.02: RB Trey Benson: Easily the second best RB in this class, but mainly for potential. Sure he has size and speed. He is still behind James Conner on the depth chart, so until Conner gets hurt, that’s where he will stay. Remember, he was a 3rd round pick in the NFL draft, mainly because of nasty knee injury he suffered at the end of the 2020 season.

2.03: QB Michael Penix: The last of the top QB’s in this draft, but he is also starting the year on the bench behind Kirk Cousins. This could be a steal.

2.04: WR Keon Coleman: And the rich get richer…Remember I mentioned the team that drafted Nabers and Odunze? Here they add another fine piece in a great situation in Buffalo. Considering his WR corps was Davante Adams, Chris Godwin, and Courtland Sutton, my hats off on the youth injection project here.

2.05: RB Blake Corum: The Rams still have Kyren Williams, who looks like he could be around for years to come. My guess is Corum becomes Kyren’s spot reliever, which works out nicely for this fantasy team, since Kyren is one of their starters. One handcuff, coming right up!

2.06: WR Ricky Pearsall: If the 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk as has been heavily rumored, this 1st round pick could easily shoot up in value. Good value pick.

2.07: WR Troy Franklin: I only had 2 picks in the second round, with nothing in later rounds, and this guy is a hidden gem. When I was reviewing Bo Nix’s film, it was a whole lot of Troy Franklin scoring td’s and making big plays. With Franklin joining his college QB in Denver, and not much WR talent outside of Courtland Sutton in Denver, Franklin has a good chance to shine early.

2.08: RB Ray Davis: Davis would make a good handcuff for James Cook, but this fantasy team doesn’t have Cook. But this team was in desperate need of RB’s, and Davis is as good as any in this class.

2.09: WR Jalen McMillan: This was my second hidden gem. Again, a slight reach, but I don’t have any later picks. A lot of good comments coming out of the Bucs training camp on this rookie, like “stud”, good work ethic, the other WR’s love him, good at contesting catches, learning quickly, etc. He might beat out Trey Palmer for their WR3. Or one of the main two (Evans and Godwin) could get hurt.

2.10: RB MarShawn Lloyd: This pick was way too early. A 2nd stringer with a bad hip?
